This letter is in the part of the File Unit: Correspondence from Harry Truman, to Bess Wallace
Truman, 1910-1959 at the National Archives. NAIL Control Number: NLT-FBP-FCF-BWT-19171124
Truman writes to Bess while serving as a lieutenant in the 129th Field Artillery, in training at
Camp Doniphan near Lawton, Oklahoma (a veteran of the Missouri National Guard, Truman had
rejoined the service when the U.S. entered World War I with its declaration of war on Germany).
He expresses his delight upon receiving her photograph in the mail, describes some of the training
his unit is receiving under the supervision of a French officer, and tells Bess how much he wants to
see her again.
